Oprah Winfrey: A Trailblazer in Television and Philanthropy
At the age of 70 years old, Oprah Winfrey continues to reign as one of the most influential figures in the entertainment industry. The Oprah Winfrey Show, which aired from 1986 to 2011, remains a cultural phenomenon, boasting an impressive 4,561 episodes. According to Own podcasts, the show holds the title of the highest-rated daytime talk show in US history, attracting between 10 million to 20 million viewers daily during its run.
However, Winfrey’s success transcends her talk show. In 2011, she ventured into cable television with the launch of her network, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), and later sold her stake in exchange for shares in 2020. Additionally, Winfrey made headlines in February when she resigned from the board of Weight Watchers, generously donating her shares, valued at approximately US$6.34 million, to the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, as reported by Reuters.
Known for her transparency about her weight-loss journey, Winfrey has been vocal about using medication for weight loss, emphasizing her commitment to integrity and avoiding any perceived conflicts of interest. Despite stepping away from Weight Watchers’ board, Winfrey continues to engage with audiences through her Oprah Special shows, where she delves into various topics and conducts in-depth interviews.
