Changing of the Guard at Deutsche Börse: Stephan Leithner Named New CEO
In a significant move, the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Börse has appointed Stephan Leithner as the incoming Chief Executive Officer, marking a pivotal transition in leadership. With a wealth of experience in capital markets and a distinguished career trajectory, Leithner is poised to steer the company into its next chapter of growth and innovation.
Assuming his role on 1st October 2024, Leithner will initially serve as Co-CEO alongside Theodor Weimer until the year’s end, when Weimer, aged 65, will gracefully step down from the Executive Board upon the expiration of his contract.
Leithner brings a robust background to his new position, having served on the Executive Board of Deutsche Börse AG since 2018, where he oversaw the crucial Pre- & Post-Trading domains. Notably, he spearheaded strategic initiatives within the Investment Management Solutions segment and played a pivotal role in advancing the group’s post-trading business. Plans for his succession will be announced in due course.
Prior to his tenure at Deutsche Börse, Leithner held prominent roles at EQT and Deutsche Bank AG, where he was instrumental in shaping the capital markets landscape. His academic prowess, evidenced by a Ph.D. from the University of St. Gallen, underpins his strategic acumen and leadership capabilities.
Martin Jetter, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, hailed Leithner’s appointment, citing his unparalleled expertise and invaluable contributions to the company’s strategic evolution. Reflecting on Weimer’s tenure, Jetter commended his stewardship during a period of uncertainty, noting remarkable growth and restoring public trust under his leadership.
In response, Weimer expressed confidence in Leithner’s ability to lead Deutsche Börse forward, underscoring their shared strategic vision and collaborative efforts in setting the company’s trajectory for future success. As the baton passes to Leithner, the stage is set for Deutsche Börse to embark on a new era of prosperity and innovation under his guidance.
