Egypt’s Richest Man Nassef Sawiris, Contemplates Radical Business Transformation

Nassef Sawiris, Egypt’s wealthiest individual and the driving force behind chemical giant OCI, is once again contemplating a transformative journey for his economic empire. Having steered the Netherlands-listed group into becoming one of the world’s leading fertilizer producers, Sawiris, with a net worth of approximately $8.6 billion, is exploring avenues for a radical business overhaul.

Sawiris’s entrepreneurial spirit is deeply rooted in his family’s legacy. The youngest son of the late Onsi Sawiris, who navigated Egypt’s challenging political landscape as a construction entrepreneur, Sawiris inherited a legacy of resilience and adaptability. Under his leadership, Orascom Construction Industries (OCI) flourished, expanding its activities into various sectors, including telecommunications, tourism, and construction.

In 2008, a pivotal moment arose when Orascom sold its cement division to France’s Lafarge for $12.8 billion. This transaction catapulted Sawiris into the realm of major shareholders in Lafarge, culminating in the formation of the world’s largest cement maker through a merger with Switzerland’s Holcim.

The path hasn’t been without its challenges. Following the 2011 revolution in Egypt, Sawiris navigated a turbulent political climate, including a travel ban imposed during President Mohamed Morsi’s tenure. Despite setbacks, Sawiris’s resolve remained steadfast, leading OCI to undergo significant restructuring and relocation to Amsterdam, focusing on the chemical sector, particularly fertilizers.

The 63-year-old magnate, who sits on J.P. Morgan’s international board, is considering various options, including a potential shift towards cash liquidity and diversification into other sectors. This move could involve further fragmenting his main holding company and selling off parts to potentially establish a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC).

Sawiris’s entrepreneurial journey reflects a commitment to resilience and adaptability amidst geopolitical upheavals. As he contemplates the next chapter, his vision for OCI and beyond underscores his unwavering dedication to redefining the future, true to his family’s legacy of innovative business practices and understanding of market dynamics.
