Leadership Development According to ARC Church Partner Daniel Floyd

There are many factors that go into whether a good idea will become a successful reality. This principle holds true to nearly everything — from starting a business to seeing a new church go from vision to creation.

According to ARC (Association of Related Churches), one of the biggest factors in whether a church will not only survive but thrive is how well its leaders are able to develop other leaders within the ministry.

Daniel Floyd of Lifepoint Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia, says he didn’t have a plan when he and his wife launched their church 18 years ago. They didn’t have a system or a tribe of people who could help them.

However, he quickly realized how important leadership development was in ensuring the long-term success of their church. Below, he shares some of the knowledge he’s gained over the years in leading a thriving church community.

Develop the Mindset

If you want to develop leaders in your church, you have to adopt a development mindset. Daniel Floyd, a partner of ARC Churches, says that if you’re not always thinking about leadership development, developing those skills in your daily life will be challenging.

It has to be in your mindset and heart before you create a process or system for leadership development. You have to be the primary leader developer, setting the tone and tenor for the entire organization.

Identify People to Develop

Running an impactful ARC church takes a great vision and a great dream. But, if you have the right team in place, moving your vision further and faster will be easier. A big challenge in creating a supportive team is identifying the right people to develop. It’s important to understand that everyone has a specific role for which they’re a fit. Not everyone is meant to be a leader, and that’s OK. As the congregation’s leader, it’s your job to always be on the lookout for the right people to develop.

Floyd says he’s always paying attention to who might be a good fit — whether that’s through observing people in his church foyer or in a local coffee shop. What he’s looking for, he said, are people who light up a room, who bring production value into his life. Leaders don’t just fall into your lap. They must be developed and created. The first step in that, though, is identifying the people who are the best fits to develop in the first place.

Always Be Developing

The action part of leadership development is to never stop, to never rest, and to always be developing. Leadership development should be a part of everything you do when you run a church. As Daniel Floyd says, if your mouth is open, you should be developing. You should always employ a teacher developer “vibe” when you’re delivering the why behind the what. Why? Because having church leaders is just as important as having doers.

Development with Support

Just like ARC Churches’ motto, “Don’t do ministry alone,” leadership development should not exist in a vacuum. ARC (Association of Related Churches) provides its members with resources and support to ensure pastors have the tools they need to grow and foster future generations of church leaders.

About ARC (Association of Related Churches)

ARC (Association of Related Churches) represents a collaborative network comprising independent congregations from various denominations, networks, and backgrounds. Its primary mission is to provide essential support and resources to church planters and pastors, enabling them to effectively share the teachings of Jesus. ARC’s operational approach revolves around empowering and equipping church leaders, fostering the widespread dissemination of the life-changing message of Jesus. Established in 2000, ARC has evolved into a worldwide entity and has played a pivotal role in facilitating the establishment of over 1,000 new churches.
