William Lewis from The Wall Street Journal comes to The Washington Post to Boost the company Assuming the role of CEO

The former Chief Executive and Publisher of The Wall Street Journal, William Lewis, has been appointed as the Chief Executive and Publisher of The Washington Post, according to an announcement by The Washington Post on Saturday.

Lewis will commence his new role on January 2, 2024, succeeding Patty Stonesifer, who assumed the position of interim Chief Executive in June. The Washington Post is owned by Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos.

The newspaper stated that it is expected to conclude the year with a $100 million deficit. The company has initiated buyout offers for employees across various departments in an attempt to reduce its workforce by around 10%. Consequently, the newsroom is anticipated to shrink to approximately 940 journalists.

Fred Ryan, who had served as Publisher and CEO for nine years, stepped down in August, succeeded by Stonesifer. During Ryan’s tenure, the Post increased its digital subscriptions, received 13 Pulitzer Prizes, and introduced the Arc XP cloud-based digital platform, which serves over 1,900 sites in 28 countries, as reported by the company in June.
