Bus by Go-Ahead Group: Who is the new CEO?
Matt Carney has been appointed as the CEO of Go-Ahead Group’s bus division. He will transition from his current role as Managing Director (Australia) at Kinetic to join Go-Ahead later this year.
This appointment is part of Go-Ahead’s organizational restructuring to support its “The Next Billion Journeys” strategy. The newly created CEO position for the bus division will complement a similar role for the rail division, which will be filled by Patrick Verwer. Patrick Verwer is the CEO of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), the UK’s largest train operating company. GTR is a joint venture between Go-Ahead and Keolis, known as Govia.
Go-Ahead stated that the creation of these two senior positions will provide additional strategic oversight for the company’s two core modes of transportation. Christian Schreyer, Group Chief Executive of Go-Ahead, sees this as a natural evolution for the company, aligning with the shape and nature of its business. Schreyer expressed confidence that these changes will enhance Go-Ahead’s agility, dynamism, and its ability to identify opportunities and deliver excellence.
Matt Carney has played an instrumental role in driving Kinetic’s success in Australia. A consortium comprising bus operator Kinetic and transport concession manager Globalvia Inversiones acquired Go-Ahead in 2022. Michael Sewards, Co-CEO of Kinetic, emphasized Carney’s pivotal contribution and how he will provide valuable leadership in the UK, furthering Go-Ahead’s global growth and industry leadership goals. Sewards highlighted Carney’s commitment to sustainability, particularly the accelerated transition to net-zero emissions.
Before joining Go-Ahead, Matt Carney joined Kinetic in 2019, with previous experience in ground transport and parking roles at Melbourne Airport. His professional background also includes positions at Tigerair Australia and the Australian Federal Police.
Greg Balkin, the Chief Operating Officer at Kelsian Group, will succeed Carney as the head of Kinetic’s operations in Australia, starting on September 18th.
