An Overview of Southlands British International School

Students in class

Rome has an outstanding collection of International schools. All of them are renowned for their excellent education standards, state-of-art infrastructure, and diversified student body. Expats usually send their children to these schools as they have a far more global environment than local schools. But, even locals have begun to show interest in these schools.

One such school which enjoys a solid reputation is Southlands British International School. It has been in Rome for a long time and has established itself as a top international school. In this article, we have listed a few things about it.

Here is an overview of Southlands British International School:

Introduction

Let’s give you a brief introduction to the school. Southlands British International School was established in 1976 and offers education to children aged between 3 and 18. The teaching program is premised upon the English National Curriculum, with a focus on several transdisciplinary themes for a well-rounded inculcation of values and knowledge.

The school is in southern Rome, just 10 minutes from the scenic Ostia beach and expansive Pineta forest. While the location is rural, it is easily accessible from the historic center of Rome.

Key Stages of Education

The following are the key stages of education at Southlands British International School:

    • Early Years Foundation Stage: Children aged between 3 and 5 are enrolled. Skills and knowledge necessary to transition to the primary curriculum are taught.
    • Key Stages 1&2: These stages cover Years 1-6, admitting students between the ages of 5 and 11. The focus is on literacy and numeracy with special classes such as Music and Italian.
    • Key Stage 3: Children fall between the ages of 11 and 14. They are taught core subjects in detail. Core subjects include languages, sciences, history, math, and English.
    • Key Stage 4: Children between 14 and 16 are prepared for IGCSE exams.
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP): The final two years of school educates students for the IBDP.

Extra-curriculars

Dedicatedly, the school provides numerous opportunities for students to engage in extra-curricular activities. These include a wide range of sports, drama, and music programs. In addition, students can participate in club activities to forge strong bonds with other students.

Moreover, the school organizes non-competitive award programs such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, in which participants must complete certain learning stages to be eligible for awards.

Since the school is part of the Globeducate network, it coordinates with the member schools to organize events such as Model United Nations, International Music Festival, and Globeducate Olympic Games.

School Facilities

To accommodate the students’ varying needs, the school maintains a large set of facilities. These include:

    • A dance studio and a music practice room.
    • A learning garden.
    • Theater spaces.
    • Three football pitches.
    • A biking trail in the forest.
    • A spacious and well-stocked library.
    • School transport.
    • A first aid center.
    • Special Care

The school understands that children may require special attention. To work toward this, a Special Education Needs department is in place to offer practical support and counsel to teachers, students, and families. The department engages in extending specialized attention to students, diversity & psychological evaluation of children from time to time and offers assistance to teachers and families to address issues effectively.
