Avignon: Where To Go And How To Spend Your Time

Avignon, the cosmopolitan city in the south of France, the gate of Provence, continues to magnetize. Avignon is an irresistible city. Its inner “heart” is more like a living village. Behind the dazzling ramparts preserved by Unesco lie streets steeped in history, alive with the sound of music and adorned with art. Avignon is a city that will shock you. A city that will seduce you and make you yearn to return again and again. The journey is an experience, and Avignon is ready to share it generously with you today.

The magic of the historic center of Avignon

The historic center of Avignon radiates from the Square, The Place del’ Horlogue. Here you will admire the City Hall. It was built between 1845 and 1851 over the palace of a former Cardinal, which the old fortified tower transformed into a bell tower in the 15th century with a clock.

Next to it, you will find the municipal theater that dates back to the 19th century and houses the local opera house. Continue your walk to the carousel that will take you to the Belle Epoque era of France of Kings. Live the fairy tale inside the Cathedral of 1150 la Notre Dame des Doms, which has been a monument of Provence since 1840. From the top of the bell tower, the gilded statue of the Virgin Mary protects the city.

Opposite the grandfathers’ Palace, Dragons and Eagles guard Avignon’s Old Mint, The Hotel des Monnaies. A little further down, old sculptures by Avignon artists and paintings by the Avignon School will take you back to the papal era and the flourishing period of the city.

The street of the Republic and the markets of Avignon

Next, we have the central Avenue, Rue de la République, that divides Avignon into two parts. On the one hand, Saint Agricol Street leads to the elegant and urban quarter. Joseph Vernet Street, Avignon’s 5th Avenue, abounds in designer clothes and luxury goods. Place Crillon, with the famous Hotel d’Europe in a former private Town mansion built in the 16th century for the Marquis de Graveson.

On the other hand, the pedestrian street and shopping zone lead you to place Pie and the covered Les Halles market adorned with a hanging garden. Provence is famous for its markets. Avignon is home to one of the region’s most famous markets. It is housed in an industrial building. Of course, don’t forget the market overflowing with local delights. Buy delicate pastries and fruits. Continue your magical journey to the adjacent Place des Carmes; it will delight you with its flower market, Farmers Market on Saturdays, and flea market on Sundays are amazing. The Square takes its name from the beautiful monasteries and the monastery church of the 13th century, which adorn the special Square of Avignon.

The street of sinks or Rue des Teinturiers

Another charming corner in Avignon that deserves your attention. The Rue des Teinturies road runs from the city walls to the Rue des Lices leading to the central city. Historically, the street was the heart of the city’s textile industry and the driving force of the Sorghum River. Walking along the road, you will pass under green trees alongside the canal. Admire historic residences such as the Maison du IV de Chiffre, one of the oldest houses in the city. Next is the Penitents Gris d’ Avignon, a beautiful chapel and house belonging to the oldest fraternity of Avignon. As you move, you will find yourself in front of the remnants of the Couvent des Cordeliers; all that remains of what was once one of the largest churches in Avignon. Finally, visit the terraces of cafes that become one with the cobbled street.

La vie est simplement belle

Avignon is a historic, cosmopolitan city and one of the most charming cities in France, with a great cultural heritage from the Middle Ages. Like the well-known French song of Stromae, “Alors, on dance, on y dance,” Avignon, although it lived hard under the hegemony of the Popes, created a jewel city for the inhabitants and the travelers who were there.
