$195 billion: Elon Musk is the world’s richest person.
With a net worth of $195 billion, Elon Musk, the chief executive officer (CEO) of both SpaceX and Tesla, has become the world’s richest person. That makes him $10 billion richer than the planet’s 2nd-richest person Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. Bezos had occupied the top spot on the list of the world’s wealthiest people since 2017.
Elon Musk owns around 20% of Tesla’s shares, plus a stake in private rocket company SpaceX. He also has some $42 billion in vested stock options, according to SEC filings. Tesla’s $765 billion market cap makes it by far the most valuable car company in the world. Over the past year, Musk has added more than $165 billion to his fortune in what’s probably the fastest bout of wealth creation in history.
Tesla shares (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw gains of nearly 8% on Thursday, overtaking Facebook to take the fifth spot on the S&P 500 by market capitalization. “How strange,” Musk wrote in response to the news on Twitter. “Well, back to work…” Elon Musk, the outspoken and envelope-pushing chief executive of Tesla, has pioneered not only the electric automotive industry but also various other industries with PayPal, SpaceX, and the Boring Company.
