One of the ways we socialize in college is through clubs or societies. They are essentially groups of students who come together and engage in specific activities. These clubs could be anything: from newspaper clubs to karate clubs; there seems to be a wide range of options available for students to join depending upon interests. When you enroll in a university or college, it is suggested that you should consider joining clubs or societies.
There are many reasons why joining a club or society is a good option—and I am going to tell you about a few of these reasons. I have enumerated 5 ‘whys’ which might be able to convince into joining a club or society during college life. Even if you have your own opinion, this article will only take a few minutes of your life and might introduce you to a different perspective.
Without further ado, here is what it means to be a part of a society or club in university.
- An opportunity to know people
College life can be intimidating and challenging without acquaintances and friends. While you will gradually make friends during classroom interactions and project works, you might be able to expand your friend circle through clubs or societies. Clubs or societies involve students from all classes, from junior to senior, as a result of which you will be able to socialize with people beyond your class. These people might be of great help to you not only as just friends but also as sources of vital information. Acquaintance with seniors, for example, can allow you to explore better internship options or find mentors. - Develop and hone interests
Societies or clubs are definitely great places to hang out with people. You should, however, not overlook their potential to hone your skills. For example, if you join a drama club, then you will get more opportunities than you ordinarily would have had. Club activities include field trips, access to first-hand information on competitions, networking with professionals, and opportunities to organize events and gain experience. Because of the exposure you are given as a member of the club, your skills develop and can be put to good use. Perhaps, you can master your skills, garner achievements, and add brownie points to your resume. - Reflects Good on Your Resume
Continuing with where we left in the preceding point, club or society memberships reflect well in your resume. Whenever you apply to internships or jobs, evaluators would take due note of your extra-curricular performance. Extra-curricular activities undertaken as a club member indicates that you can perform beyond the academic circle. Your participation in club activities reflects on your organizational and networking skills which are very important in any internship or job you want. You should be able to produce results in professional groups, and club activities help you gain experience in that area. - An Active Lifestyle
Spending all your life in classrooms and libraries may make you a boring and passive person. You should try developing an outgoing and sociable personality that encourages an active lifestyle. Whether or not you really enjoy such a lifestyle, it can prepare you mentally for the future. Once you are out of the university and into the professional world, an active lifestyle is what will produce better and quicker results. There are people, such as introverts who do not enjoy the kind of attention you are given and expected to give in club activities. However, the long-term benefits are plenty because the adjustment to such an environment builds a coping mechanism that will ultimately help you in your professional life. - Have Fun
I was part of the cultural society and the sheer amount of fun we have had there remains an indelible memory. Societies and clubs are an educational experience, but they are also important for the right amount of amusement in college life. While many might think of them as distractions, they are actually the right kind of distractions you need. Otherwise, the pressure bundles up and eventually affects your mental state. So, join clubs and societies for the extra fun you deserve during college life.
