Online Education Gains Traction in Emerging Economies

Students pursuing higher education in emerging economies are increasingly opting for online degree programs, according to a survey conducted by Statista Consumer Insights. The findings indicate that 21% of degree students in South Africa, 19% in India, and 12% in Brazil had engaged in online studies within the 12 months preceding the survey.

The trend was also observed in developed nations, though to a lesser extent. In Australia, 8% of respondents reported participating in online academic programs, while in the United States, the figure stood at 7%. European countries and Japan recorded even lower participation rates, with China also reporting a modest 7% of students recently undertaking degree-related coursework online.

The preference for online education in emerging economies may be attributed to several factors, including limited access to suitable local programs, a fragmented higher education system with numerous smaller institutions, and the need for many students to work while studying.

For older or non-traditional students returning to education, online degree programs often provide a more flexible alternative, particularly for those seeking to maintain employment while pursuing their studies.
