Here’s our list of the best audiobooks for kids

Many people like to read books. But it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Reading requires concentration and dedication, which is why most people find it boring. The same applies to kids.

Audiobooks are an excellent alternative for physical printed books. In fact, Deloitte has predicted that the global audiobook market will grow to US$3.5 billion in 2020. The masses have clearly taken a liking to them.

Compared to text, emotions are better expressed and perceived through audio. So, kids find listening to audiobooks more interesting than reading text from. Audiobooks can also spark in your kid an interest to start reading books. Audiobooks are a great solution for kids with reading difficulties.

Listening to audiobooks involves comprehension of words we hear. Thus, it enhances the kid’s listening skills. Just like reading, listening to audiobooks also helps expand the kid’s vocabulary.

Wondering which audiobooks your kid should listen to? Here’s our list of the best audiobooks for kids:

  1. The Complete Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis: Some parents are concerned about the Christian references. But kids won’t get most of the religious parallels unless someone points those out. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader are the must-listen books. Prince Caspian and The Horse and His Boy are good too, but kids may get bored of the dull parts. One note for parents: instances of death and mourning may not be appropriate for sensitive or traumatized kids.
  2. The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling: The notion of a kid being raised by animals is captivating enough for kids. The Jungle Book also teaches some crucial life lessons. One has to face one’s fears to triumph over it. Despite being far weaker than Shere Khan, Mowgli managed to beat him. So, no matter how strong your fears are, you can defeat them with friends on your side. A lone person is weaker than a group of people.
  3. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien: At the start of the book, Bilbo Baggins is pretty comfortable in his hobbit-hole. But over the course of the story, the hairy-footed hobbit sets out on an adventure, faces adversities head-on, and triumphs! This can motivate kids to venture out of their comfort zone to make the most of life. Also, the rich details of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth are awe-inspiring. The extraordinary level of imagination and nonstop adventure will keep your child engrossed for hours.
  4. Animal Stories by Roald Dahl: Your kid must have surely watched Beethoven, Cats & Dogs, Garfield, The Jungle Book, and many more animal movies. Some even grow up with animals. Kids just love animals. The “Animal Stories” audiobook includes Roald Dahl’s fun stories like The Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Enormous Crocodile, and Esio Trot. Dahl’s playful language will keep your kid hooked on to these classic animal stories.
  5. Matilda by Roald Dahl: Matilda is the story of a five-year-old. She teaches herself to read. After finishing the kids’ section of the library, she moves on to the adults’ section. Although this is impressive, her parents are too narrow-minded to identify Matilda’s genius. After joining an elementary school, she faces the short-temper and bullying of school headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. She then gets the better of her and several unpleasant adults. Kids will eagerly listen to the feats of the brave and fascinating protagonist.
  6. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory gives us some important life lessons. And it does so in an immensely funny way. The honest Charlie Bucket can become your kid’s role model. This Roald Dahl masterpiece is a hit among kids and parents alike. Dahl is known for his catchy humor, bizarreness, and exceptional imagination in his writings. Without Charlie, we’d not have Harry. Dahl’s stories have deservedly made it to this list thrice.
  7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling: This list just wouldn’t be complete without Harry Potter books. They offer some essential life lessons. Your kid will come to know that friends always stick together, people are a mixture of both good and bad, we must be considerate of others, we should be brave even when it’s difficult, love is stronger than evil, and many more things.
