Travel documentaries to see the world through the internet

We all love to travel. Most of the vacations are away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. The fresh air in the countryside makes you healthier. It improves your blood pressure, heart rate, immune system, and food digestion. Traveling keeps you away from the stress of your daily life.

You get to explore new cuisines. You come across a variety of cultures. When you travel, you do things that are not routine. You are stepping outside of your comfort zone. This is good for personal development. Adventure activities like scuba diving and hiking are fulfilling activities. Whether you go with your dear ones or alone, you make memories on your vacations. You feel happy and rejuvenated after a vacation.

Since a majority of us are stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many countries have banned international travel to help limit the spreading of the novel coronavirus. In such settings, none of us can travel. It seems to be a matter of time before this pandemic is brought under control. In the meanwhile, you can see the world through these travel documentaries:

  • Street Food (2019)
The creators of Chef’s Table came up with Street Food. You may wonder why a food & cooking show is on this list. Isn’t getting to try new food also a part of traveling? Street Food also focuses on the strong bond the locals share with the food they make. So far, they have managed to cover the spicy and delicious street food of Asia. And the creators intend to explore street food from all over the world similarly.
  • Tales by Light (2015)
Photographers usually get less attention as they are busy looking for the next best shot. Tales by Light puts some of these photographers in the well-deserved spotlight. Every episode features a wonderful photographer. And it revolves around the photographer’s next journey. We get to see what all goes behind the making of an amazing shot. Some episodes feature wildlife and delightful landscapes. Others are about some barely-known communities.
  • Pedal the World (2015)
Most of us would be glad to have traveled the world. German film director, Felix Starck has done just that. But he’s done so on a bike. The kind that does not have an engine. Over a year filled with adventure, Felix traveled 18,000 kilometers across 22 countries. And he has filmed himself throughout the journey. You may feel a strong urge to do something similarly fun. Just hold on till the world is back to normal.
  • Losing Sight of Shore (2017)
If you feel the flight from California to Australia is lengthy, try rowing the distance. The 8,000-mile-long journey across the Pacific would take nine months. We know that because the Coxless Crew made this journey. But what motivated this team of four to carry out this herculean task? They did it to raise awareness about how “everyone has their own pacific to cross”. By doing so, they also raised £250,000 to support two charities – Breast Cancer Care and Walking with the Wounded.
  • Life in A Day (2011)
Want to know what it felt to be alive on 24th July 2010? Regardless of your answer, Life in a Day is a must-watch. Creating the video was fun. People from around the globe were asked to send in videos of a day in their lives. Without any guidelines or restrictions, people had complete freedom to record videos. 80,000 videos were received from 192 countries. The creators made a 90-minute-long film from the 4,500 hours of crowdsourced video content.
  • Antarctica: A Year on Ice (2013)
Very little is known about the icy continent of Antarctica. This travel documentary is based on Antarctica’s Ross Island region. It has two research bases – New Zealand’s Scott Base and United States’ McMurdo Station. The film revolves around the lives and routines of the research station employees. It is shot over a year and shows how the employees work to keep the equipment functioning. This lets scientists continue their research without disruptions. 24-hour sunny summer days and months of blackout in winter make Antarctica and interesting place to live in.

Once you are done with all these, you should watch these too:

  • Sahara with Michael Palin (2002)
  • Riding Solo To The Top of The World (2006)
  • A Map for Saturday (2007)
  • Stephen Fry in America (2008)
  • Frozen Planet (2011)
  • Under an Arctic Sky (2017)
  • The Kindness Diaries (2017)
