Countries with the largest diaspora population in the world, 2019

With an estimated 17.5 million strong diaspora, India has the largest diaspora population in the world, according to the United Nations report on migration trends. The report found 272 million people lived as international migrants, or in a country other to the one they were born in.

Mexico had the second-largest diaspora population at 11.8 million, followed by China (10.7 million) and Russia (10.5 million). The report also said that the top ten countries of origin account for one-third of all international migrants.

  5. Syria – 8.2 million
  6. Bangladesh – 7.8 million

  8. Ukraine – 5.9 million
  9. Philippines – 5.4 million
  10. Afghanistan – 5.1 million

The United States continues to lead the countries in terms of being home to the largest immigrant population in the world – 51 million. The US is followed by Germany and Saudi Arabia – 13 million each.

Regionally, Europe hosted the largest number of international migrants (82 million), followed by Northern America (59 million), and Northern Africa & Western Asia (49 million).

At the country level, about half of all international migrants lived in only ten countries – predominantly the US, which hosted 51 million, or about 19% of the world’s total – followed by Germany, Saudi Arabia, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.

India hosted 5.1 million international migrants in 2019. Among the international migrants (5.1 million) in the country, the female population was 48.8%, and the median age of international migrants was 47.1 years. In India, the highest number of international migrants came from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal.
