Understanding Different Types of Law Firms

Lawyers

For every legal issue you might have, there’s a lawyer who is ready to represent you and build a case, file the proper paperwork, or draw up the right legal documents to help you with whatever bind you might find yourself in. There are some attorneys who are general practice lawyers, who do not limit themselves to one area of the law. This is often common for younger lawyers, who aren’t sure what their niche in the industry should be yet, or small areas. This is also common for experienced lawyers in smaller towns that may not have the market for many different types of attorneys. For the majority of attorneys, however, they work with a specific area of the law, in which they are experts. There are many different types of law firms that focus on various issues. Here are some of the most common ones you may find yourself interacting with.

Personal Injury Lawyer

If you are injured, physically or psychologically, a personal injury lawyer is the one to approach about taking your case. Whether you’re injured in a car accident or a slip-and-fall incident, whether an individual is at fault or a business, a personal injury lawyer will hold that party liable for the injuries you suffered.

Estate Planning Lawyer

An estate planning lawyer will work with you during your lifetime to plan for what happens to your estate after your death. This process begins during your lifetime and should be discussed with your attorney and your family while you’re still young, in case of an accident that could result in death or mental disability. Estate planning is more than just your last will and testament, however. They can help you assign power of attorney and set up living trusts.

Employment Lawyer

Employment lawyers work with both employees and employers to deal with issues that arise in an employment relationship. This may be issues with harassment on the job, FMLA violations, or disputes within employment contracts. While workers compensation also deals with issues on the job, employment lawyers are a completely different area of the law.

Workers’ Compensation Lawyer

On the subject of employment, a workers’ compensation lawyer deals with injuries that occured while on the job. This type of attorney will help you get compensation for injuries that occur in a workplace, whether that be injuries you sustained or incidents that resulted in the injury or death of a loved one.

Criminal Lawyer

A criminal lawyer deals with those who have been accused of a crime, whether that be an individual or an entity such as a business. An attorney that deals with criminal matters will be able to inform you on the process of being charged with a crime, such as bail, arraignment, sentencing, and pleas.

Medical Malpractice Lawyer

A law firm that specializes in medical malpractice would be able to help you with issues you might face due to the negligence of a doctor or medical professional. Medical malpractice attorneys will help you prove that problems you are having are due to a misdiagnosis or mistreatment by a medical professional and will get you the compensation you deserve for your hardships.

Family Lawyer

If you are looking for help with issues surrounding your family, a family lawyer would be where to turn. A firm that specializes in family problems would be the place to turn when writing up a prenuptial agreement, fighting for custody of a child, or planning to get a divorce.

Defective Products Lawyer

Defective product lawyers specialize in just that – products that are defective and cause consumers a hardship because of their faulty manufacturing. Manufacturers are in charge of making sure their products are safe, and if they are unsafe for a particular audience, this must be disclosed. If you’ve suffered from a product that was unsafe, such as a toy containing small parts that was not labeled as unsafe for children, a defective products lawyer will represent you and help you get the compensation you deserve.

Civil Litigation Lawyer

If you’re looking to sue an individual or business, or if you’re the one being sued, a law firm that specializes in civil litigation would be your best bet. They specialize in handling situations such as landlord/tenant issues, intellectual property disputes, and environmental law.
