Revealed: World’s Most Powerful Passport For 2019; It’s not American Or British

The U.S. passport has slid in the rankings and now shares the sixth spot along with the United Kingdom, according to the Henley Passport Index. It currently holds the same power ranking as Austria, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, and the U.K.

Taking the number one position in 2019 is Japan – a Japanese passport have visa-free access to 190 countries. Joint second is Singapore and South Korea, while France and Germany are joint number three.

Fourth place saw Denmark, Finland, Italy, and Sweden have access to 187 countries. Luxembourg and Spain shared fifth place with visa-free access to 186 countries.

The ranking is based on data from the International Air Transport Association and is updated in real time, which means that rankings could still change throughout the year. A powerful passport is measured by how many countries citizens can visit without a visa.

1. Japan

2. Singapore and South Korea

3. Germany and France
Visa-free access to countries: 188

4. Denmark, Finland, Italy, and Sweden

5. Luxembourg and Spain

6. Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, UK, and US
Visa-free access to countries: 185

7. Belgium, Canada, Greece, and Ireland
Visa-free access to countries: 184

8. The Czech Republic
Visa-free access to countries: 183

9. Malta
Visa-free access to countries: 182

10. Australia, Iceland, and New Zealand
Visa-free access to countries: 181

The least powerful passports in the world for 2019 were Iraq and Afghanistan which came in 104th place with access to just 30 countries.
