These European Countries Spend The Most On Food

When it comes to households spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages, Romania ranked number one on the list, spending over 27.8%, that’s according to the latest figures compiled by Eurostat. The United Kingdom came in in the last place, spending just 8% of household expenditure on average.

Lithuanians ranked Europe’s number two with households spending 21.6% of their total expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages in 2017. Estonians came third, spending just over 20%, and Bulgarians a close fourth on 19.2%.

In 2017, households in the European Union (EU) spent 12.2 % of their total consumption expenditure on food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Generally speaking, the more developed a country is, the smaller the percentage of household income it spends on food. There are only four countries in Europe that spend less than 10% of their household income on food: the United Kingdom is last at 8.2%, followed by Luxembourg at 8.9%; Ireland spends 9.2% and Austria 9.9%.

The figures do not mean that food is more expensive in Romania than in the United Kingdom. In fact, quite the reverse.
