German institutions are cementing a dominant position as Europe’s most innovative universities, according to rankings by Reuters data, which draws heavily on the quantity of patents and academic papers that the institutions producthe e.
The University of Erlangen Nuremberg (also known as Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg or FAU) was Germany’s highest-ranked institution, coming in at 31st, with the Technical University of Munich and University of Munich taking second and third place, respectively.
Detailed findings & methodology: To identify the 9 most innovative universities in Germany, CEOWORLD magazine reviewed Reuters’ 4th-annual ranking of the 100 most innovative colleges for 2018. Overall, the US continues to dominate the list, with 46 universities in the top 100; Germany and Japan are tied for second best performing country, with nine universities each. South Korea has 9 universities on the list; China, France and the United Kingdom each have 5; Switzerland has 3; Belgium, Canada, Israel and the Netherlands have 2, and Denmark and Singapore each have 1.

1. University of Erlangen Nuremberg.
The University of Erlangen Nuremberg ranked No. 31 on the list – filed 211 patents between 2011 and 2016. 52.1% were subsequently granted.
2. Technical University of Munich.
The Technical University of Munich ranked No. 45 on the list – filed 177 patents between 2011 and 2016. 44.6% were subsequently granted.
3. University of Munich.
The University of Munich ranked No. 56 on the list – filed 107 patents between 2011 and 2016. 42.1% were subsequently granted.
4. The Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz.
The Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz ranked No. 72 on the list – filed 107 patents between 2011 and 2016. 38.6% were subsequently granted.
5. University of Freiburg.
The University of Freiburg ranked No. 81 on the list – filed 167 patents between 2011 and 2016. 48.5% were subsequently granted.
6. Ruprecht Karl University Heidelberg.
Ruprecht Karl University Heidelberg ranked No. 82 on the list – filed 144 patents between 2011 and 2016. 32.6% were subsequently granted.
7. Dresden University of Technology.
Dresden University of Technology ranked No. 86 on the list – filed 209 patents between 2011 and 2016. 58.4% were subsequently granted.
8. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) ranked No. 92 on the list – filed 183 patents between 2011 and 2016. 51.9% were subsequently granted.
9. Free University of Berlin.
Free University of Berlin ranked No. 100 on the list – filed 115 patents between 2011 and 2016. 32.2% were subsequently granted.
