Stanford Graduate School of Business

Located in Palo Alto, California, Stanford Stanford has been named the most innovative universities in the world, according to Reuters’ fourth-annual ranking of the 100 most innovative colleges. It is Stanford’s fourth year running on the most-innovative list. Stanford filed 691 patents between 2011 and 2016. 41.5% of those were subsequently granted.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge ranked No. 2 on the list – filed 1,480 patents between 2011 and 2016. 45% were subsequently granted. Notable alumni include Charles Koch, the co-owner of Koch Industries, and John Thain, chairman, and CEO of the CIT Group.

US universities continue to stand out as the most innovative in the world – 8 of the top ten on the newly released 2018 list— and 46 of the top 100 — are located in the US.

Six of the schools from last year’s top 10 are there again (the University of Minnesota System dropped from 8 to 27, Vanderbilt dropped from 10 to 11). The list identifies and ranks the educational institutions by comparing factors like the number of research papers published and how many patent filings a school made in the last year.
