Potential candidates for the next CEO position at Morgan Stanley.

James P. Gorman

The CEO of Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS), James Gorman, has announced his intention to resign from his position within a year. Morgan Stanley has a strong group of potential internal candidates, three of which are the most probable options. James Gorman was recently ranked No. 1 in a list of the world’s best CEOs for 2023; meanwhile, Morgan Stanley ranked No. 6 in the CEOWORLD magazine’s ranking of the most influential companies in the world.

Three potential CEO candidates: Over the next few months, Morgan Stanley’s board will be working on succession planning with their compensation, management development, and succession committee. This committee, chaired by DENNIS M. NALLY, will report to the full board, led by independent director THOMAS H. GLOCER.

CEOWORLD magazine reached out to Morgan Stanley spokespeople for comment on the three potential candidates, but no response was given. Below are biographies of the candidates who are all members of Morgan Stanley’s operating committee.

EDWARD (TED) PICK, 54

Morgan Stanley’s institutional securities group is led by Ted Pick, who serves as its co-president. His responsibilities include overseeing various areas such as investment banking, equities, fixed income, global capital markets, and research.

Prior to this role, Pick was the global head of sales and trading. During his time as the head of institutional equities, he successfully led the business to become the top franchise worldwide for five consecutive years.
Pick joined Morgan Stanley in 1990 and was elevated to the position of managing director in 2002.

ANDY SAPERSTEIN, 56

The wealth management unit of the firm, which has expanded through several acquisitions under Gorman, is led by its co-president, Andy Saperstein.

Prior to his current role, Saperstein was the COO for the institutional securities group at Morgan Stanley. He first joined the company in 2006 as the COO of national sales and later became the head of U.S. wealth management following the acquisition of Smith Barney in 2009.

DANIEL SIMKOWITZ, 58

Morgan Stanley’s investment management is led by Dan Simkowitz, who also serves as co-head of the company’s strategy and execution.
Starting in 1990, he embarked on his career at Morgan Stanley and has since worked in New York, Tokyo, and Hong Kong.

Simkowitz has an impressive background in global capital markets, having previously served as co-head. He was the lead capital markets partner for the firm’s assignments with the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve from 2008 to 2012. Additionally, he has worked on some of the largest IPOs in history.
