A Conversation with Ernest Reinhardt: Innovating Fitness and Beyond

Ernest Reinhardt is a dynamic entrepreneur with a diverse portfolio spanning real estate, lending, and innovative fitness solutions. As the inventive mind behind HARDTFIT, Ernest successfully transitioned his entrepreneurial drive from the beverage industry, where he played a pivotal role in launching and expanding Adult Chocolate Milk, to the fitness sector with his groundbreaking invention, the ROWFORMER. This unique exercise machine, which seamlessly integrates the principles of Pilates with cardiovascular training, has set new standards in the fitness industry.
Ernest’s journey in business began after completing his education at Mater Dei High School and Newport Beach High School, followed by studies at Orange Coast College. His strategic vision led to significant achievements, including securing nationwide distribution and prominent retail partnerships for Adult Chocolate Milk. Ernest Reinhardt’s expertise in sales and marketing, combined with his innovative approach to product development, has been instrumental in not only launching successful enterprises but also navigating them through challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, Ernest continues to expand his influence in the fitness world, partnering with Strong Pilates to bring the ROWFORMER to a global audience.
How did your journey begin in the diverse world of entrepreneurship, spanning real estate, lending, and now fitness?
My entrepreneurial journey has always been about seizing opportunities and navigating through different industries. Initially, I dipped my toes into real estate and lending, which gave me a solid foundation in business operations and understanding market dynamics. This experience was crucial when I ventured into the world of fitness with HARDTFIT and earlier, helping to launch Adult Chocolate Milk. Each industry taught me something unique about business, from negotiation and sales to marketing and product development.
Can you tell us about the inception and rise of Adult Chocolate Milk? What role did you play in its success?
Adult Chocolate Milk started as a fun idea between my sister and her best friend. They wanted to recreate the classic childhood taste of chocolate milk with an adult twist by adding a splash of vodka. As exciting as the idea was, it required a robust business strategy to get off the ground. I jumped in to handle the sales and marketing, driving our brand to achieve nationwide distribution in just 18 months. We worked with major distributors like Southern Wine and Spirits and got our product into key retailers like Costco and Kroger. It was a whirlwind experience that taught me a lot about building a brand from scratch.
Transitioning from beverages to fitness, what inspired you to invent the ROWFORMER?
The inspiration for the ROWFORMER came from a personal passion for fitness and noticing a gap in the market. There were existing exercise machines, but none that effectively combined the principles of Pilates with the intensity of cardiovascular workouts. I envisioned a machine that could offer a comprehensive workout, enhancing core strength and overall fitness. This led me to design the ROWFORMER, a machine that integrates rowing and reformer Pilates into a seamless exercise experience.
What challenges did you face when securing patents for the ROWFORMER in multiple countries?
Securing patents is never a straightforward path, especially when you’re dealing with different international patent laws. The process in the USA, Australia, and New Zealand involved meticulous documentation and proving the uniqueness of the ROWFORMER. It was crucial to ensure that every aspect of the invention was well-documented and met all the criteria for innovation and utility. The journey was lengthy and required a lot of persistence and attention to detail.
The fitness industry took a massive hit during COVID-19. How did the pandemic affect HARDTFIT and your plans for the ROWFORMER?
Like many businesses, HARDTFIT was significantly impacted by the pandemic. We had just started gaining momentum with our studio in Costa Mesa/Newport Beach when we had to close our doors due to health regulations and safety concerns. It was a tough decision but necessary. However, every challenge comes with a silver lining. We shifted our focus from running physical studios to selling our ROWFORMER machines and licensing the technology to Strong Pilates, which has helped us reach a broader audience globally.
What makes the ROWFORMER unique compared to other fitness equipment in the market?
The ROWFORMER is truly the first of its kind. It’s not just about rowing; it’s about integrating the full-body conditioning of Pilates with the cardiovascular benefits of rowing. This machine offers a Pilates-inspired, cardio-infused workout that targets almost every part of the body. The design encourages both strength and endurance training, making it suitable for a wide range of fitness enthusiasts, from beginners to seasoned athletes.
How has partnering with Strong Pilates helped in the global expansion of the ROWFORMER?
Partnering with Strong Pilates was a strategic move that has propelled the ROWFORMER onto the global stage. Strong Pilates has a formidable presence in the fitness industry, and their commitment to expanding into multiple countries has opened up incredible opportunities for us. They handle the studios and manage the brand expansion, which allows us to focus on enhancing the product and scaling production. With plans to open 150 sites in the USA alone, the future looks bright for the ROWFORMER.
Looking back, what do you consider your most significant achievement in your entrepreneurial career?
It’s hard to pinpoint just one as every project has its own set of challenges and rewards. However, I’d say that seeing the ROWFORMER come to life from a simple sketch to a patented product now used in studios worldwide gives me a tremendous sense of pride. It embodies my vision of innovation and fills a unique niche in the fitness industry.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to make their mark in multiple industries?
Diversify your knowledge and stay curious. The more you understand different markets and industries, the better equipped you’ll be to identify opportunities and navigate challenges. Also, resilience is key. Not every venture will be a success, but each experience provides valuable lessons that can pave the way for future successes.
What’s next for you and HARDTFIT? Are there new innovations on the horizon?
We are always looking to innovate. While we continue to expand the reach of the ROWFORMER through Strong Pilates, I’m also exploring other potential fitness innovations that can complement or enhance the current offerings. Fitness is an ever-evolving field, and staying ahead requires constant innovation and adaptation. Keep an eye on HARDTFIT; we’ve got some exciting plans in the pipeline.
