Metsä Group Appoints Jussi Vanhanen as New President and CEO
Metsäliitto Cooperative has announced the appointment of Jussi Vanhanen, LLM, MBA, as its new CEO. In addition to this role, he will also serve as the President and CEO of Metsä Group, officially assuming his new responsibilities on July 1, 2025. Until then, Ilkka Hämälä will continue in the position before transitioning to special duties within the company. Hämälä will remain in this capacity until his retirement on October 23, 2025.
Vanhanen has been a member of Metsäliitto Cooperative’s Board of Directors since 2022, providing him with valuable insight into the company’s key operations.
Jussi Linnaranta, Chairman of the Board of Metsäliitto Cooperative, emphasized Vanhanen’s extensive experience in the industry and his long history in international roles. He described Vanhanen as a values-driven leader with a strong strategic vision and an inclusive leadership style. Linnaranta highlighted his deep understanding of the cooperative ownership model and its potential for processing high-value products derived from Finnish wood for the global market. Expressing confidence in Vanhanen’s capabilities, he wished him success in his new role.
Vanhanen expressed enthusiasm about his appointment, acknowledging the trust placed in him. He noted that Metsä Group operates with strong principles, a clear direction, and a committed, skilled workforce. Looking ahead, he expressed eagerness to collaborate with the entire team to further develop the company and strengthen its global market position.
Reflecting on Hämälä’s tenure, Linnaranta recognized his significant contributions to Metsä Group’s growth and development. He credited Hämälä with overseeing major investment projects, including the construction of the Kemi bioproduct mill, advancing resource efficiency, side-stream utilization, and the adoption of regenerative forestry and land-use principles. These initiatives, Linnaranta stated, demonstrated the company’s commitment to sustainability and the bio- and circular economies.
