Rakuten CEO Highlights Telecom Division’s Role in AI-Driven Growth
Hiroshi Mikitani, founder and CEO of Rakuten Group Inc., has underscored the critical role of the company’s telecommunications division in driving growth through artificial intelligence. Despite entering Japan’s wireless market four years ago, Rakuten has continued to report financial losses.
Mikitani stated that the mobile division, which now serves over 8 million users, is instrumental in leveraging exclusive user data to develop specialized AI applications. He explained that Rakuten does not aim to compete directly with major players such as OpenAI or Google but instead focuses on creating integrated AI solutions tailored for niche markets.
As part of its strategic plans, the company is preparing to introduce an AI assistant designed to function as both a shopping and travel agent.
In a move to strengthen its AI capabilities, Rakuten has brought on board Ting Cai, a former Google expert, to expand the company’s technological reach beyond ecommerce and travel services.
