Mark Zuckerberg Becomes Third-Richest Person in the World Ovetaking Larry Ellison
Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg reclaimed the title of the world’s third-richest person on Monday, surpassing Oracle founder Larry Ellison. The two tech billionaires had alternated between third and fourth place in the wealth rankings as recently as Friday. Zuckerberg’s net worth climbed by more than 4% to $217.7 billion following the stock market close on Monday, while Ellison’s dipped by 0.3% to $209 billion.
The fluctuations in their net worths reflected the performance of their respective companies. Meta’s stock closed at $630.20, representing a 4% gain, while Oracle’s stock fell by 0.3%, closing at $165.78. On Friday, January 3, Ellison had ended the day ahead of Zuckerberg, despite similar shifts in rankings throughout the day.
The top two spots on the wealth leaderboard remain unchanged, with Elon Musk holding the top position at $425.2 billion, followed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos at $241 billion. Ellison, who owns approximately 40% of Oracle and serves as chairman, chief technology officer, and cofounder, had been competing with Bezos for the second spot as recently as November when his net worth exceeded $228 billion. However, Ellison’s wealth took a significant hit in December, dropping $15 billion after Oracle’s earnings report revealed it had fallen short of expectations, leading to the company’s worst stock performance in nearly a year.
Zuckerberg, who owns roughly 13% of Meta’s stock and serves as its CEO and chairman, saw his wealth increase alongside other tech executives following Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the November election. Ellison’s net worth surged by $12 billion in the weeks after the election, while Bezos gained $7 billion. Musk, who has been a key adviser to Trump, experienced the largest increase, with his net worth growing by nearly $21 billion the day after the election.
Both Zuckerberg and Ellison complement their financial portfolios with notable real estate holdings. Zuckerberg owns over 10 properties, including extensive acreage in Hawaii and homes in Silicon Valley and Lake Tahoe. Ellison’s portfolio is even more expansive, including ownership of almost an entire Hawaiian island, a luxury resort, and several properties in California.
On Monday, Meta announced the addition of new members to its board of directors, including UFC President and CEO Dana White, Exor CEO John Elkann, and former Microsoft team lead Charlie Songhurst. Zuckerberg stated on Facebook that these appointments align with Meta’s focus on opportunities in artificial intelligence, wearable technology, and the future of social media, emphasizing their importance in achieving the company’s long-term vision.
