In the Ring and the Courtroom: The Life and Practice of Christopher Souster in Calgary
Christopher Souster, based in Calgary, Alberta, is a seasoned barrister, solicitor, and founder of Nimmons Law Office. With a legal career spanning over two decades, Christopher is known for his expertise in litigation, landlord-tenant disputes, real estate transactions, and personal injury claims. Beyond the courtroom, his passion for boxing as a competitor, referee, and cutman is a defining feature of his multifaceted life. His dedication to justice, community engagement, and sportsmanship makes him a unique figure in Alberta’s legal and athletic spheres.
What inspired you to pursue a career in law, and how has your journey shaped your perspective on advocacy?
I grew up in a small Alberta town where I saw firsthand how access to justice could transform lives. That early exposure inspired me to study law at the University of Alberta, where I earned my LLB in 1998. The journey hasn’t been without challenges, but every hurdle has reinforced my commitment to advocacy. Whether it’s representing a tenant in a dispute or fighting for a client’s rights after a motor vehicle accident, I see advocacy as a way to empower others and ensure fairness.
With a focus on landlord-tenant law, what makes this area of practice so important to you?
Landlord-tenant law is the backbone of stable housing, and stable housing is the backbone of a strong community. I’ve spent years working with organizations like the Calgary Residential Rental Association (CRRA) to create better outcomes for both landlords and tenants. Disputes in this area often involve deeply personal stakes, so it’s crucial to approach them with empathy and precision. I take pride in crafting solutions that not only resolve disputes but also set a precedent for ethical practices.
How do you balance your legal practice with your passion for boxing?
Boxing and law might seem like worlds apart, but they share a common thread: strategy and resilience. In boxing, as in litigation, you must anticipate your opponent’s moves and adapt your approach. My involvement as a licensed judge, referee, and even a world champion in the master light heavyweight division has taught me discipline and focus—qualities I bring into every courtroom.
What has been the most rewarding case of your career, and why?
One of my most fulfilling cases involved advocating for a tenant whose rights were being blatantly ignored. It wasn’t a high-profile case, but the outcome ensured that their family could stay in their home. For me, those victories—the ones that truly change lives—are the most rewarding. They remind me why I started this journey.
You’ve contributed to the development of tenancy laws in Alberta. How do you see the legal landscape evolving in this area?
The legal landscape is shifting towards more accessible and streamlined dispute resolution, and I’ve been fortunate to play a role in that through initiatives like the RTDRS and affordable housing task forces. As housing challenges grow, especially in urban centers like Calgary, I believe we’ll see more emphasis on alternative dispute resolution and updated legislation that reflects modern realities for both landlords and tenants.
What advice would you give to someone navigating a motor vehicle accident claim or personal injury case?
Document everything and seek professional legal advice immediately. Insurance companies often prioritize their bottom line over fair compensation, so having an advocate who understands the system is vital. My approach is to handle the complexities of the claim so my clients can focus on recovery. Compassion and precision are key in these cases.
How does your boxing experience influence your approach to conflict resolution and negotiation in law?
In boxing, you learn that not every fight is about landing the knockout punch. Sometimes it’s about playing the long game and earning points. The same applies to negotiation and conflict resolution. I approach every legal dispute with a clear strategy, knowing when to push hard and when to pull back. It’s about achieving the best outcome, not just winning for the sake of it.
What do you hope clients and colleagues remember most about working with you?
I hope they see me as someone who truly cares about their success and well-being. Whether it’s a complex litigation case or a straightforward real estate transaction, I aim to bring integrity, expertise, and a personal touch to every matter. I want to be remembered as someone who made a difference—both in the lives of my clients and in the community at large.
Christopher Souster’s dual passions for law and boxing illustrate a life dedicated to strategy, resilience, and advocacy. As the founder of Nimmons Law Office, he continues to leave an indelible mark on Calgary’s legal landscape while inspiring others to pursue justice both inside and outside the ring.
