Donald Trump reacts to Elon Musk’s growing political influence

Donald Trump

President-elect Donald Trump dismissed the notion that Elon Musk influences the Republican Party. This reaction came after Musk was involved in defeating a government spending bill last week. Following this incident, Democrats and Trump’s opponents mocked him by referring to Musk as “President Musk.”

Trump said the notion that he has “ceded the presidency” to Musk is a fiction and that even if Musk wanted the job, he couldn’t get it because of the Constitution’s requirement that the U.S. president be a natural-born citizen. Musk was born in South Africa.

“No, he’s not going to be president, that I can tell you,” Trump said. “And I’m safe. You know why he can’t be? He wasn’t born in this country.”

We estimate Elon Musk’s net worth at $444 billion, making him the wealthiest person in the world. He is over $200 billion ahead of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is in second place with an estimated net worth of $244 billion.

On Wednesday, just two days before a potential government shutdown, Musk posted more than 100 messages on his X platform, criticizing a 1,500-page spending bill endorsed by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for being overly lengthy and expensive.

Later that same day, former President Donald Trump also voiced his opposition to the legislation, which effectively blocked it from being brought to a vote in the House. Subsequently, lawmakers approved a revised proposal on Friday, just hours before the government was set to shut down, and it was signed into law.

This situation led to discussions about Musk’s perceived undue influence over the Republican Party. Fox News’ Peter Doocy remarked that Musk is “the center of the universe on Capitol Hill,” while Sean Hannity referred to him as the “new sheriff in town.” Meanwhile, Democrats labeled Musk as the de facto president.

Musk, who was the biggest donor in the 2024 election, has regularly appeared alongside Trump since the election, dining with high-profile figures at Mar-a-Lago and sitting ringside with the president-elect at a recent UFC event.
