CEOs Brace for Systemic Change and Embrace Expanded Roles in Society, Egon Zehnder Reveals
A recent study by Egon Zehnder reveals that a majority of CEOs anticipate “groundbreaking systemic changes” over the next decade. In response, they acknowledge the growing importance of working collaboratively with governments to drive positive societal transformation.
The survey found that 80% of global CEOs believe their responsibilities now extend beyond corporate leadership, emphasizing the need to engage with public stakeholders to address pressing societal challenges. Climate change emerged as the most significant area of opportunity, with 32% of CEOs highlighting their role in fostering cooperation between businesses, governments, and other stakeholders. Similarly, 30% cited AI and generative AI as key focus areas, while 13% pointed to the importance of promoting a more equitable economy.
Michael Ensser, global chair of Egon Zehnder, stated that CEOs are embracing a new era of leadership, positioning themselves as pivotal players in societal advancement. He emphasized that as challenges grow more complex, fostering curiosity and openness within organizations will be essential for success.
The survey also revealed that 68% of CEOs view business as intrinsically linked to geopolitics, recognizing their shared responsibility in addressing geopolitical challenges. However, 20% held the view that resolving such issues remains the sole responsibility of governments.
The survey further highlighted the tension between global superpowers such as the U.S. and China, exacerbated by disputes over trade, tariffs, espionage, and access to resources and technology. CEOs identified several critical issues impacting their organizations, including talent acquisition, AI, market disruptions, geopolitical instability, and climate change.
To navigate these challenges, CEOs emphasized the importance of developing adaptive leadership skills. They prioritized listening, fostering a culture of openness and curiosity, and considering diverse perspectives to stay ahead. One CEO remarked that their primary task is to provide a sense of purpose, ensuring that employees find professional and personal relevance in their work.
