Spain and the UK Lead as Top Destinations for EU Student Mobility

According to the latest data from Eurostat, Spain and the UK emerged as the leading destinations for EU university students participating in mobility programs lasting at least three months. In 2022, nearly 364,000 EU students, representing 9% of the total university population, took part in such programs abroad.

Eurostat reported that 11% of these students chose Spain as their destination, making it the most popular choice. The UK followed closely, attracting 9.7% of the participants, while the US was the third most preferred destination at 7.2%.

When focusing exclusively on master’s students, the UK was the top destination, hosting 23,467 students. Spain was a close second, with 23,457 master’s students. The US ranked third, welcoming 17,035 students, followed by Germany (14,296), Canada (10,010), and France (7,977).

For undergraduate students, Spain remained the most popular choice, attracting 16,771 participants. The UK was the second most chosen destination, with 11,993 undergraduates, followed by Italy (9,480), the US (9,004), France (8,923), and Germany (8,534).

The UK’s exit from the Erasmus mobility programme following Brexit, due to cost-related concerns, was another notable change. The Erasmus program was replaced by the Turing Scheme, which offers opportunities for study abroad in over 100 destinations. Students interested in this program can apply through their universities, though visa requirements may vary depending on the host country.

French students were the most mobile among their EU peers, accounting for 49.5% of all mobility participants—nearly 180,000 in 2022 alone. German students ranked second, comprising 14% of participants, while Italian students followed at 13%.

Certain countries saw significant participation from specific EU nations. For instance, 54% of students in mobility programs in Greece were from Cyprus. In Italy, 51% of the incoming students were from Malta, and Germany hosted 27% of students from Luxembourg.
