Kevin Russell Named Interim Chair of NBN Co, Effective January 2025
NBN Co has appointed board member Kevin Russell as interim chair, beginning on January 1, 2025. He will take over from Kate McKenzie at the Australian government-owned broadband provider.
In a statement, the government clarified that Russell’s interim appointment is intended to maintain continuity on the board until a permanent chair is selected.
Russell joined NBN as a director in April 2024, following his tenure as CEO of communications company Vocus, a role he held from 2018 until stepping down in early 2023.
McKenzie’s term concludes at the end of 2024. She initially joined NBN Co as a director in December 2019 and was appointed chair in January 2022.
In October, NBN Co appointed Ellie Sweeney as the new CEO on a five-year contract. Sweeney has previous experience as both CEO and COO at Vocus and spent over a decade with Telstra. She succeeds Stephen Rue, who resigned in May to take on the role of CEO at Optus.
