New Boeing CEO, Kelly Ortberg, Confronts Cultural Challenges in the Company

Boeing’s recently appointed CEO, Kelly Ortberg, addressed employees on Wednesday, acknowledging deep-rooted cultural issues within the company and emphasizing the critical need to avoid further mistakes. Ortberg, who took on the CEO role in August, spent an hour urging staff to take ownership when they identify problems, underscoring the importance of accountability.

Ortberg characterized the company’s current state as a low point in its history, reflecting on Boeing’s many ups and downs. He urged employees to refrain from engaging in unproductive complaints and instead concentrate on the tasks that lie ahead.

During the meeting, Ortberg shared details of a conversation he had with then President-elect Donald Trump, during which they discussed the potential impact of tariffs. He warned that a trade war with China could significantly affect Boeing’s operations.

The meeting followed the conclusion of a major labor dispute, as Boeing workers in Seattle recently approved a new contract. The agreement ended a strike that lasted over seven weeks, closing two assembly plants and idling around 33,000 employees. The strike had intensified Boeing’s challenges, particularly after a January incident involving a fuselage panel failure mid-flight on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX.

Previously, Ortberg had emphasized the need for a “fundamental culture change” at Boeing, acknowledging that the transformation would be a lengthy process. The company has not only grappled with issues in commercial aviation but also with setbacks in its space division and loss-making defense contracts.

On October 12, Boeing disclosed plans to reduce its global workforce by 10% over the coming months. In line with this strategy, the company announced earlier in the week that it would eliminate nearly 2,200 jobs in Washington state, where some of its oldest manufacturing facilities are located.
