Q&A with Michael R. Martin, Founder of MRM Construction Services, LLC
Michael R. Martin is the founder of MRM Construction Services, LLC, a residential remodeling company based in Albany, New York, specializing in quality craftsmanship, sustainable building practices, and smart home integration. With close to 30 years of experience in the construction industry, Michael has cultivated a reputation for his commitment to customer-focused design and meticulous attention to detail.
Originally from Massena, New York, Michael developed a passion for construction early on, which led him to earn an associate’s degree in Electrical Construction and Maintenance from Canton Tech. He refined his skills working with firms like BBL Construction and Jackson Demolition before launching his own company in 2019. Since then, MRM Construction Services has grown under his leadership, transforming homes to reflect the unique lifestyles and needs of each client.
Michael Martin’s approach blends traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation, incorporating eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient solutions into his projects. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his two daughters, Jessica and Miranda, and engages in outdoor activities like boating, snowmobiling, and hockey. Michael’s dedication to his craft and community underscores his goal of creating beautiful, lasting homes where families can thrive.
What inspired you to transition from working for large construction firms to founding your own company?
I spent many years with companies like BBL Construction and Jackson Demolition, which gave me an incredible foundation and insight into the industry. Over time, though, I started to feel a strong pull toward working more closely with clients and handling projects from start to finish. Founding MRM Construction Services in 2019 allowed me to blend what I learned over those years with a more personalized approach. I wanted to create a company where each project felt like a collaboration, where homeowners were part of the process, and where we could focus on quality over quantity. Starting my own company was about aligning my values—like commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and client satisfaction—with my work.
How do you ensure that each remodel truly reflects the client’s personality and lifestyle?
The key is listening. At the beginning of each project, I sit down with the clients and spend as much time as needed understanding their lifestyle, needs, and aesthetic preferences. Some people need more space; others are looking for specific styles or functions. We look at inspiration images, discuss must-haves, and talk about their long-term goals for the space. It’s more than just creating something beautiful—it’s about crafting a space they’ll love to live in every day. We involve clients at every stage, from initial concepts to finishing touches, so the end result truly feels like their own.
What are some unexpected challenges you’ve encountered during a remodel, and how do you handle them?
Every remodel has its unique set of surprises, especially in older homes. You might open up a wall and find outdated wiring or structural issues that weren’t apparent at the start. When these things come up, the first step is to keep a level head. We assess the situation, figure out the safest and most effective solution, and then discuss it with the client. I believe in being transparent and communicating clearly so clients are never caught off guard. These unexpected issues are opportunities to find creative solutions, and they’re part of what keeps the job interesting.
How has sustainability become a focus for you in residential remodeling?
Sustainability is something I’m very passionate about, and it’s become a core element of MRM Construction. Today’s homeowners are looking for energy-efficient, eco-friendly options that not only reduce costs but also lessen environmental impact. We incorporate sustainable materials, like reclaimed wood or low-VOC paints, and energy-efficient systems, like smart thermostats and LED lighting. I see it as my responsibility to make sustainable choices accessible and attractive to clients. Green building isn’t just a trend—it’s the future, and I think every builder should be doing their part to promote it.
In your opinion, what’s the most rewarding part of your job?
For me, the best part is seeing the look on a client’s face when they walk into their newly remodeled space for the first time. There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking a vision and turning it into reality. Remodeling isn’t just about upgrading a space; it’s about creating a place where people can live, grow, and make memories. Knowing that our work is part of that journey is what keeps me motivated. It’s not just a job; it’s something that has a lasting impact on people’s lives.
How has technology changed the way you approach remodeling projects?
Technology has transformed the industry in so many ways. We use design software that allows clients to see 3D renderings of their space before we even begin construction. Smart home technology has also become a big part of our work—clients want convenience and energy savings, so we install systems like automated lighting and smart thermostats that can be controlled from a phone. These technologies make homes more efficient and add a lot of value. Being able to visualize designs and integrate smart systems allows us to take our projects to a whole new level.
How do you balance the business side of running a company with being on-site?
It’s definitely a balancing act. I enjoy being on-site and hands-on with projects because it allows me to maintain quality and connect with my team. At the same time, managing the business side—like client relationships, finances, and planning—is crucial to keep everything running smoothly. Over the years, I’ve learned the importance of delegation and trusting my team to handle different aspects of the work. Having a reliable team in place allows me to be present where I’m most needed, whether that’s on-site or in the office.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone considering a home remodel?
Plan and budget thoroughly, but also be prepared for a few surprises. Remodeling often reveals hidden issues, so I always recommend setting aside at least 10-15% of your budget for unexpected costs. Also, take the time to find a contractor who communicates openly and values your input. A remodel is a big investment, both financially and emotionally, so make sure you’re working with someone who understands your vision and will keep you involved in the process.
How do you keep up with the latest trends and innovations in construction?
I’m constantly learning. I read industry publications, attend workshops, and connect with other professionals. Trends and innovations are always evolving, from new sustainable materials to the latest in smart home technology. Listening to clients is also a big part of staying current—they often know what they want, and their interests push me to explore new techniques or materials I might not have considered otherwise. Staying curious and open to learning is essential in this field.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Outside of work, I love spending time with my daughters, Jessica and Miranda. We enjoy outdoor activities like boating, snowmobiling, and playing hockey. Being outdoors recharges me and gives me new ideas for my work. It’s important to have a balance, and my family and hobbies keep me grounded. This work can be demanding, so finding time to relax and enjoy life outside of construction helps me come back to each project with a fresh perspective.
