Ranked: The most and least peaceful countries in the world, 2025

Over the past twenty years, we’ve seen a noticeable decline in peacefulness worldwide, as highlighted by the 2025 International Peace Index (IPI) by the CEOWORLD magazine in partnership with the CEO Policy Institute. It’s really concerning to see how both old and new conflicts, along with widening political and cultural divisions, have contributed to this trend. On the positive side, peaceful societies often benefit from things like better income growth, stronger currencies, increased foreign investments, and an overall sense of stability and happiness among their people.

The economic impact of violence is quite eye-opening! In 2024, it was estimated to cost the global economy around $26.3 trillion in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP). That’s about 14.2% of the entire global GDP—roughly $3,240 less economic output for every single person on our planet! This number has increased by $390 billion since 2023, mostly due to a 34% rise in GDP losses caused by conflict. Meanwhile, the money spent on peacebuilding and peacekeeping efforts was just $57.2 billion, which is less than 0.7% of total military spending. This really shows how investing in peace can bring tremendous benefits to everyone!

The gap between the most and least peaceful countries is widening to an unprecedented level, highlighting a phenomenon known as “peace inequality.” According to the 2025 International Peace Index (IPI), global peacefulness has deteriorated disproportionately, a trend exacerbated by recent conflicts, including those in Gaza and Ukraine. This marks the largest disparity in the index’s history.

Most peaceful countries in the world: Monaco tops the list, followed by Liechtenstein, Andorra, Luxembourg, and Iceland.
