What drew you to pursue an executive role in the veterinary industry?

My journey started with a passion for animal health. After working in clinical practice, I recognized the need for innovative care models in the veterinary industry. That realization led me to pursue an MBA to gain a deeper understanding of business management. Combining my veterinary knowledge with strategic business skills enabled me to take on executive roles where I could drive large-scale change, improve service delivery, and support veterinary professionals.

What does a typical day look like for you as a CEO in veterinary medicine?

My days are incredibly diverse. One moment I’m involved in strategic planning, discussing the expansion of services or facilities; the next, I’m engaging with our veterinarians and team members on the clinic floor. A significant portion of my time is also spent analyzing operations, financial performance, and market trends to ensure we’re providing the best care while maintaining efficiency. Flexibility and adaptability are key because new challenges and opportunities arise daily.

What skills are essential for success in executive veterinary roles?

A blend of clinical knowledge, strategic planning, and business acumen is crucial. You need to understand veterinary medicine, but you also have to be able to lead teams, manage operations, and make informed financial decisions. Communication skills are vital, as you’ll be liaising with stakeholders, from clinic staff to board members. Empathy and a collaborative mindset help in building trust and driving positive outcomes across the organization.

How do you address challenges such as workforce shortages and work-life balance for veterinary professionals?

Addressing workforce shortages involves a multi-faceted approach, including creating supportive work environments, offering competitive benefits, and providing continuing education opportunities. We emphasize work-life balance by promoting flexible schedules and mental health resources. Supporting our teams is essential not just for their well-being, but also for retaining talented professionals who are passionate about animal care.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to enter an executive role in the veterinary industry?

Never stop learning. A career in veterinary leadership requires a deep understanding of both the clinical and business aspects of the industry. Be proactive in seeking out business education and leadership training. Gain experience in different areas of veterinary practice, whether that’s clinical care, operations, or management. Most importantly, stay true to your passion for animal health and welfare; it’s the foundation for everything you’ll achieve in this field.
