New Leadership Takes Flight at the Australian Airports Association
The Australian Airports Association (AAA), the representative body for airports across the country, has announced the appointment of Simon Westaway as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective November 4.
With over 25 years of experience in executive roles, particularly in aviation and tourism, Mr. Westaway brings extensive expertise to his new position. His past roles have included senior positions at Jetstar, Tourism Australia, and Impulse Airlines, as well as serving as Executive Director of the Australian Tourism Industry Council.
AAA Chair Kym Meys commented on Mr. Westaway’s appointment, noting that his deep understanding of the industry and ability to engage with government at the highest levels made him an ideal choice for the role. Meys highlighted the importance of strong leadership as the sector continues to undergo significant reforms, including those outlined in the Aviation White Paper.
She also emphasized that as the industry rebounds from the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Westaway’s leadership will be crucial in addressing key challenges and driving positive outcomes for AAA members and passengers alike.
Mr. Westaway expressed his enthusiasm for leading the AAA and representing Australia’s $105 billion airports sector, stressing the critical role airports play in connecting communities and supporting the national economy. He acknowledged that while Australia’s aviation industry remains one of the world’s strongest, passenger numbers have yet to fully recover to pre-pandemic levels, even as domestic travel continues to grow.
Westaway also remarked on the challenges faced by the sector this year, referencing the financial struggles of Bonza and Rex Airlines, which have affected competition in the domestic market. He emphasized the need for ongoing efforts to ensure regional and remote communities retain sustainable air services, particularly in light of Rex’s voluntary administration, which has caused uncertainty in many of these areas.
Under his leadership, the AAA team aims to be a constructive and influential voice for airports, members, passengers, and the broader communities they serve.
The AAA also extended its gratitude to Greg Fordham OAM, who has been serving as the interim CEO. Meys praised Fordham’s dedication and expertise, stating that his contributions have been invaluable during his time in the role.
As the peak national body, the AAA represents over 340 airports and aerodromes, ranging from small regional airstrips to major international hubs. Additionally, the AAA represents more than 150 corporate members who provide essential products and services to the aviation industry.
