Denmark Pledges a 40% Rise From its Previous Contribution to Tackle Development and Climate Challenges

Denmark, one of 52 nations supporting development projects through the World Bank’s initiative, is urging other countries to join in addressing the world’s most urgent development and climate challenges. The country has announced plans to nearly double its financial commitment to the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank’s fund dedicated to supporting low-income countries.

Denmark’s increased pledge of approximately $495.1 million represents a 40% rise from its previous contribution, underscoring the nation’s sustained commitment to global development. This announcement comes ahead of the IDA’s final 21st replenishment (IDA21) meeting, scheduled for December in Seoul, South Korea. The IDA fund is replenished every three years to continue supporting critical projects in the world’s poorest regions.

Denmark’s decision follows a recent appeal from African heads of state, calling for a robust replenishment of the IDA program. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized her country’s dedication to fostering global equity and prosperity. She expressed pride in responding to Africa’s call for increased funding and encouraged other nations to step up their commitments.

Frederiksen highlighted that the financial pledge is aligned with Denmark’s resolve to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fulfill the Paris Climate Agreement. She stressed the importance of collective action, stating that only through global cooperation can the world overcome the most pressing development and climate challenges.

The IDA works alongside the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), with a mission to reduce poverty, promote sustainable economic growth, and improve living conditions in the world’s poorest countries. Through grants and low-interest loans, the IDA has been a critical tool in these efforts, with about half of the funding provided as non-repayable grants, according to the World Bank.

Denmark is part of a group of 52 high- and middle-income countries that contribute to the IDA, which is further supported by funds raised in the capital markets and additional grants from the World Bank. The previous replenishment package, announced in December 2022, totaled $93 billion, with $23.5 billion contributed by donor countries. These funds have been instrumental in helping 77 low-income nations recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several countries that once benefited from the IDA, including China, Indonesia, and Turkey, have since returned as donors, highlighting the transformative impact of the program. World Bank Group President Ajay Banga praised the IDA’s ability to multiply every donor dollar fourfold, calling it “the best deal in development.”
