Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley to Step Down After Upcoming Season
Nick Hockley, the CEO of Cricket Australia (CA), has announced his decision to step down following the upcoming season, ending nearly 13 years with Australian cricket, including five years as CEO. Hockley is expected to step down around the end of March 2025, though the exact timing may vary depending on the appointment process for his replacement.
CA Chairman Mike Baird confirmed Hockley’s plan to leave after the next summer, acknowledging his contributions, particularly during the pandemic, and highlighting the substantial growth and stability achieved under his leadership. Baird noted that Hockley secured several long-term deals and set the stage for continued success in Australian cricket.
Baird also emphasized that Hockley’s immediate priority is to deliver a successful summer for all stakeholders, including fans, players, and partners. He added that there would be an appropriate time to celebrate Hockley’s achievements once he steps down. The Board will soon begin the process of finding Hockley’s successor to ensure a smooth transition.
Hockley mentioned that the decision was difficult but emphasized that with a highly anticipated summer and significant progress on the five-year strategic plan, it was an opportune moment for him to pursue new challenges. He also assured that his focus remains on the current season and ensuring a smooth transition.
Hockley was appointed interim CEO of CA in June 2020 and became the permanent CEO eleven months later. He successfully navigated the organization through the pandemic and has since secured a solid foundation for future growth. His tenure saw the implementation of a new five-year strategy, long-term media deals, a new player agreement with a significant pay increase for female cricketers, and a revitalized Big Bash League.
On the field, Hockley’s leadership coincided with a period of outstanding success for Australia’s national teams. Notable achievements include the first tour to Pakistan in 24 years, multiple Ashes victories, six ICC trophies, and gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
Hockley’s involvement in Australian cricket began in October 2012 as GM Commercial & Marketing for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, which was a significant financial success. He later served as Head of Commercial Projects and then as CEO of the Local Organizing Committee for the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, overseeing a record-breaking Women’s T20 World Cup final.
With a legacy of growth and success, Hockley’s departure marks the end of an era for Cricket Australia as the organization prepares for a new chapter under future leadership.
