Medal Race Heats Up at 2024 Paris Olympic Games

As the world’s top athletes compete for individual glory and national pride at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, spectators are keenly watching to see which country will emerge with the most medals. By Wednesday, the U.S., Japan, China, and host country France were leading the medal count.

Simone Biles, who became the most decorated Olympic gymnast, earned a gold medal with the women’s gymnastics team and aims to add another on Thursday. In another historic achievement for Team USA, the women’s rugby sevens team earned its first-ever Olympic medal, securing bronze against Australia. This marks the first rugby medal for the U.S. since the men’s team won gold at the 1924 Olympics, also held in Paris.

The U.S. has an advantage with the largest delegation of 594 athletes, closely followed by France with 571 athletes. As of Wednesday, China led in gold medals with nine, while Japan and France were tied for second with eight each.

The U.S. is aiming to replicate its success from the 2020 Tokyo Games, where it won a total of 113 medals, the highest count by a significant margin, followed by China with 89 medals.

French athletes have demonstrated their versatility by winning medals in eight different sports by the end of Tuesday. Meanwhile, the U.S. showed strength in swimming, with 11 of its early medals coming from aquatic events.
