Jensen Huang from NVIDIA and Mark Zuckerberg from Meta on the Future of AI at SIGGRAPH 2024
During a much-anticipated fireside chat at SIGGRAPH 2024, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang and Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg explored the revolutionary potential of open-source AI and AI assistants.
Mark Zuckerberg began the discussion by unveiling AI Studio, a new platform designed to make AI more accessible to creators and small businesses by enabling the creation, sharing, and discovery of AI characters. He envisioned a future where every business, similar to having an email address and a website, would have an AI presence.
Jensen Huang agreed, noting that in the future, every restaurant and website would likely incorporate AI. Huang acknowledged Meta’s leadership in AI, highlighting its advancements in computer vision, language models, and real-time translation. He credited Meta with significant contributions to the AI field, such as the development of PyTorch.
The conversation then shifted to the importance of open source in AI development. Both leaders emphasized that open platforms are crucial for innovation. Zuckerberg discussed Meta’s commitment to AI, particularly through Meta AI, which is integrated across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The recent release of Llama 3.1, an open-source AI model, was highlighted as a significant step in this direction. This model, featuring 405 billion parameters and trained on over 16,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, represents a considerable investment in AI research and development.
Zuckerberg explained that quality improvements in AI are driven by the development of more general models. He envisioned a future where platforms like Facebook or Instagram could operate as a single, unified AI model that integrates various content types and systems. He also underscored the collaborative nature of these advancements, suggesting that such progress would lead to more personalized and engaging content, such as digital avatars and virtual worlds.
Huang elaborated on the practical applications of AI, imagining scenarios where AI could assist in real-time content creation and editing. He described a future where interactions with AI are more fluid and dynamic, moving beyond the current turn-based dialogue system to one that contemplates multiple options and simulates outcomes.
Looking ahead, both CEOs shared their visions for the future. Zuckerberg expressed optimism about integrating AI with the real world through augmented reality eyeglasses, developed in collaboration with Luxottica, to transform education, entertainment, and work. Huang envisioned AI interactions evolving to become more intuitive and responsive, enhancing their utility and power.
Throughout their conversation, Huang and Zuckerberg maintained a light-hearted tone, discussing topics ranging from fashion to food. The session concluded with a symbolic exchange of leather jackets, with Zuckerberg presenting Huang with a black leather shearling jacket and Huang gifting Zuckerberg his own leather jacket, a special piece given to him by his wife for the event. Zuckerberg humorously noted that the jacket’s value increased because it was “used.”
