39% Rising Optimism Among Companies Regarding Security in Mexico
A recent publication by the American Chamber of Commerce of Mexico reveals a growing sense of security among businesses operating in the country.
The survey, released on Monday, shows that 39% of companies now feel safer compared to the previous year, a notable increase from the 17% reported in 2022. Additionally, 43% of respondents anticipate further improvements in their security over the coming year, up from 29%.
Pedro Casas Alatriste, Executive Vice President and General Director at AmCham, remarked that the figures were surprising, especially considering the significant concern for security among businesses in the region. Key worries for respondents included the safety of employees and their families, as well as cybersecurity.
Casas suggested that advancements in technology could be making it more cost-effective and simpler for companies to enhance their security measures. The report indicated that 16% of respondents are currently employing artificial intelligence for security purposes, such as access control and cybersecurity, with 28% planning to implement AI in the future.
Despite these positive trends, 60% of firms still experience some level of impact from criminal activities, with 12% indicating that organized crime has influenced the sale, distribution, or pricing of their products.
Casas expressed concern about this issue, noting that while not all areas of Mexico are unsafe, there are specific regions with significant crime problems that require coordinated efforts between the government and the private sector. The states of Mexico, Guanajuato, and Michoacan were identified as having the most pressing security concerns.
The survey gathered responses from 218 executives, including CEOs and heads of security. Among the respondents, 42% represented foreign firms operating in Mexico, 31% were national companies conducting business exclusively within the country, and the rest were either international firms or Mexican businesses with operations abroad.
