Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is set to sign edicts into force today, allowing citizens of 93 countries and territories visa-free entry to Thailand, enabling them to stay for a maximum of 60 days. Foreign visitors wishing to travel and work in Thailand will be able to stay up to 180 days under a special visa valid for five years. Additionally, foreign students who earn a bachelor’s degree or higher in Thailand will be permitted to stay for one year following their graduation.
These measures, previously approved by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, also include an update to the list of countries subject to special immigration procedures, increasing the number from 19 to 31. The new regulations are aimed at boosting foreign arrivals to enhance Thailand’s tourism industry, a key factor in improving the Thai economy amidst weak export growth and underperformance in other business sectors.
Similarly, the government of Laos has expanded the number of visa waiver-eligible countries by adding eight European nations. Since July 1, 2024, citizens of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Greece, Sweden, and Spain can visit Laos without needing to apply for a visa or purchase one on arrival for visits up to 15 days. This change simplifies travel and reduces costs for visitors.
The Lao Ministry of Public Security announced the relaxed visa policy as part of its “Visit Laos 2024” program to attract international arrivals and unlock the country’s tourism potential. Chinese tourists traveling in groups organized by officially registered agencies can also benefit from 15-day visa-free travel.
Furthermore, Laos has extended the stay period of multiple-entry visas from 30 to 60 days for citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K. Thai tourists traveling in groups with passports and temporary border passes can now stay in Laos for up to 10 days, an increase from the previous three-day limit.
