Turkey’s Trade Flourishes with SCO Member States – Exports Reaching $26.1 Billion in 2023
Over the past five years, Turkey has witnessed a significant surge in its exports to the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). From a modest $14.1 billion in 2019, exports have escalated by 85 percent, reaching nearly $26.1 billion in 2023.
Last year, the SCO member nations accounted for 10 percent of Turkey’s total export volume, highlighting the growing importance of these trade relationships. Imports from SCO countries have also seen a remarkable increase, doubling from $55.6 billion in 2019 to $106.3 billion in 2023. This substantial rise underscores the deepening economic ties between Turkey and the SCO members.
The collaboration extends beyond trade. Energy agreements among SCO states, which hold a significant share of the world’s natural gas reserves, play a pivotal role in this economic partnership. Moreover, transportation and infrastructure projects are enhancing connectivity and further strengthening these ties.
Turkey’s involvement in China’s Belt and Road Initiative is a testament to its commitment to these collaborative efforts. Recently, an agreement was signed for the construction of a China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, a project set to bolster regional connectivity under the Belt and Road framework.
