Mehdi Benbachir Named CEO of Societe Generale Maroc

Societe Generale Maroc has named Mehdi Benbachir as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1, 2024. The appointment was confirmed during the company’s Supervisory Board meeting on May 23.

With nearly two decades of banking experience, Benbachir brings extensive expertise in investment banking, mergers and acquisitions, and private equity. He joined Societe Generale Maroc in 2005, beginning his journey in the Large Corporates Division and steadily advancing within the organization.

By 2008, Benbachir was leading the Advisory Division, where he advised corporate clients on complex financial transactions. His strategic insights and leadership abilities led to a series of promotions, culminating in his role as Deputy CEO in 2018.

Throughout his career at Societe Generale Maroc, Benbachir has managed various facets of banking operations. In 2013, he took charge of the bank’s Investment Banking activities, overseeing advisory services, trading operations, securities management, and private equity investments. His leadership was further recognized in July 2020 when he was appointed head of the Retail Business Unit, managing markets for individual consumers, professional clients, and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

As CEO, Benbachir will oversee Societe Generale Maroc’s Regional Delegations, Retail Business Unit, SME Business Unit, and Marketing Department. The bank is currently ranked 4th among Moroccan banks, operating approximately 400 branches with over 3,000 employees serving nearly 800,000 clients.
