Tourism in Croatia Increases Rapidly: Most Visitors Are Germans

Situated along the Adriatic Sea, Croatia seamlessly blends history and culture with its captivating scenery. In 2024, Croatia continues to allow visa-free entry for visitors from 90 countries, permitting short-term stays for tourism. This privilege extends to nations such as Albania, Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United States, among others.

Tourist numbers in Croatia have been on the rise, with 0.5366 million visitors recorded in March 2024, up from 0.31245 million in February 2024. Historical data shows an average of 488,212 visitors monthly from November 1999 to March 2024. Projections indicate a continuous increase in international arrivals, anticipating an additional seven million tourists by 2029, totaling nearly 60 million visitors.

This visitor data represents tourists traveling for leisure rather than work, with stays not exceeding 12 months. The forecast has been adjusted to account for the anticipated impact of COVID-19. These statistics are part of Statista’s Key Market Indicators (KMI), which cover macroeconomic, demographic, and technological factors in over 150 countries and regions.

Tourism is vital to Croatia’s economy, contributing nearly 19 percent to its GDP in 2023. This figure is expected to grow, potentially surpassing 26 percent by 2028, as the sector continues to recover and expand post-pandemic.

In 2022, Croatia solidified its reputation as a premier beach destination in Europe, welcoming close to 46 million tourists. Germany topped the list with approximately 3.3 million visitors, followed by Austria and Slovenia with 1.4 million and 1 million visitors, respectively.
