Starbreeze Names Interim CEO
Starbreeze, the renowned game developer behind titles like Payday, is entering a new chapter of leadership as CEO Tobias Sjögren steps down and board member Juergen Goeldner assumes the interim CEO role. In a recent announcement, Starbreeze revealed that Goeldner has assumed leadership responsibilities immediately while the quest for a permanent CEO commences. Collaborating closely with Sjögren, Goeldner aims to facilitate a seamless transition period for the company.
Chairman of the board, Torgny Hellström, hinted at a shift in company strategy as the reason behind Sjögren’s departure, emphasizing the need for new leadership to execute the evolving vision. Hellström expressed gratitude for Sjögren’s contributions and wished him success in future endeavors.
Goeldner’s extensive experience spans over four decades in the gaming industry, with notable executive roles at companies like Focus Home Interactive, Square Enix, Eidos, and THQ Germany. Joining Starbreeze as a board member in the previous year, Goeldner brings a wealth of industry knowledge and leadership acumen to his new position.
Meanwhile, Sjögren’s journey with Starbreeze began in 2019 as a board member, transitioning to interim CEO in 2020 following the departure of Mikael Nermark. Sjögren’s tenure saw significant milestones, including the successful launch of Payday 3, which contributed to the company’s turnaround from financial challenges in 2018 to its first profitable year in 2023.
Goeldner echoed optimism for Starbreeze’s future, highlighting the company’s strong legacy in global game development and the strategic opportunity presented by the launch of Payday 3. As he assumes an operational role, Goeldner looks forward to collaborating with the management team to drive the execution of the company’s strategic objectives.
The transition in leadership marks a pivotal moment for Starbreeze as it navigates new opportunities and challenges in the dynamic gaming industry landscape.
