Former CEO of Twitch Emmett Shear Succeeds Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI

OpenAI recently announced the appointment of Emmett Shear, former head of Twitch, as its new CEO, succeeding Sam Altman. This decision followed a sudden change in leadership, with Altman being ousted due to alleged communication issues with the board.

Emmett Shear, previously CEO of Twitch and a co-founder of Justin.tv, transitioned into the role after stepping down from Twitch in March. He brings with him a background that includes a stint as a part-time partner at Y Combinator, where Altman was previously involved before joining OpenAI.

Reports surfaced about the chaotic situation at OpenAI, revealing that the board had removed Altman and appointed Mira Murati, the technology chief, as an interim replacement. The move came as a surprise to many, prompting efforts by a group of investors—such as Microsoft, Tiger Global, Thrive Capital, and Sequoia Capital—to reverse the decision despite not holding board seats and being unaware of the board’s actions.

Altman, in a late Saturday post, expressed his affection for the OpenAI team, with Murati and others responding positively. OpenAI gained significant attention after the release of its ChatGPT chatbot in late 2022, allowing users to engage in sophisticated conversations by inputting simple text queries.

The company, initially structured as a nonprofit in 2015, didn’t follow the conventional equity ownership pattern of Silicon Valley startups. Rather, the board oversaw its activities, as highlighted in a recent blog post.
