Matthew Barnes Joins Tesco UK to Assume the role of CEO following Jason Tarry’s Decision to Depart
Tesco has made the announcement that after an illustrious career spanning over 33 years, with six of those years spent as the UK CEO, Jason Tarry has chosen to depart from the company in March 2024. Following Jason’s departure, Matthew Barnes will assume the role of UK CEO in March 2024.
Matthew brings a wealth of retail experience to the table, having held various senior positions at Aldi, including his previous role as UK & Ireland CEO and co-head of Aldi Sud’s Executive Board, where he oversaw many of Aldi’s international operations, as well as Global Sourcing, Buying & Supply Chain.
Jason’s tenure at Tesco has been marked by his exceptional contributions, from steering the company through a successful turnaround to leading it during the recent challenging times of the pandemic. His efforts have not only restored Tesco’s competitive edge in the UK but also refocused the business on its customers’ needs.
In recognition of Jason’s significant impact, Tesco Group CEO Ken Murphy expressed his appreciation. Jason Tarry himself commented on his departure, stating his admiration for the company and his colleagues.
Commenting on Matthew’s appointment as the incoming UK CEO, Ken Murphy remarked on his confidence in Matthew’s skills. In response to his new role, Matthew Barnes shared his excitement to join the company.
