Akbar Al Baker Resigns from his role as CEO of Qatar Airways
Akbar Al Baker is stepping down from his role as the Chief Executive of Qatar Airways, bringing an unexpected conclusion to one of the aviation industry’s lengthiest leadership tenures. Al Baker, who has been at the helm of the airline since 1997, is set to officially resign on November 5th.
Qatar Airways has not disclosed the reason for this abrupt departure but has announced that Badr Mohammed Al Meer, currently serving as the Chief Operating Officer of Doha Hamad Airport (which serves as the airline’s primary hub), will take over as the new CEO.
Recognized as one of the aviation sector’s most outspoken and influential executives, Al Baker is widely acknowledged for his pivotal role in elevating Qatar Airways to its status as a premier global carrier. Over his 27-year tenure, he oversaw extensive expansion and investments in Doha airport, turning it into a well-established global hub. Al Baker currently also holds the position of CEO at the airport.
