Attica Group CEO Spyros Paschalis After Tragic Death of Ferry’s Passenger

Attica Group

Spyros Paschalis, CEO of the Attica Group, made the decision to step down from his position on Thursday in the wake of the tragic incident involving Antonis Karyotis at the port of Piraeus.

The unfortunate event occurred when Karyotis, aged 36, was pushed into the waters of the port by crew members as he attempted to board the Blue Horizon ferry, which is owned by the Attica Group. Tragically, he drowned as the ferry departed from the port. Subsequently, the captain of the Blue Horizon, along with three crew members, have been charged with various offenses.

In a recent statement, the Attica Group announced the resignation of Spyros Paschalis, who had been a part of the company for approximately 20 years. Panagiotis Dikaios, the current Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Attica Group, has assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer on an interim basis. The Group’s Board of Directors is expected to convene in the near future to appoint a new CEO.

In response to Karyotis’ tragic death, the company also declared its intention to conduct an internal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Independent external consultants will be engaged to assist with the investigation, with the primary goal of ensuring that the Group’s procedures and protocols are never compromised again, as stated by the Attica Group.

Furthermore, the Greek Seamen’s Federation has announced a 24-hour strike scheduled for Wednesday, September 13, in connection with the events that transpired on the ramp of the Blue Horizon, leading to Karyotis’ untimely death. This strike, scheduled for Wednesday, will impact all ship categories and ferry routes throughout Greece.

The Greek Seamen’s Federation is advocating for the safety of maritime transport and the preservation of human life. They have expressed their support for Karyotis’ family and emphasized that the behavior exhibited by the crew members of the Blue Horizon does not reflect the conduct of the majority of Greek seamen.
