Top 5 Surfing Beaches In Indonesia

Indonesia is indeed one of the most beautiful countries in the world, considering various factors like glaciers, beaches, mountains, coral reefs, volcanoes, rainforests, etc. It hosts more than 17,000 islands giving it over 50,000 km of coastline. Those who love the water can experience the world here with the activities like parasailing, snorkeling, scuba diving, river rafting, tubing, and numerous other water sports. Out of all these, surfing in Indonesia is the most popular. Let’s have a look at the beaches which serve the best surfing for tourists.

  1. Sorake Beach, Nias
Nias’ Sorake Bay is an international name for surfing and magnetizes surfers from all over the globe. Its waves are so perfect that Nias has been holding International Surfing Championships since 1993. Located in the district of Teluk Dalam, which is on the Southern tip of Nias Island, Sorake Beach has constant waves that are perfect for beginners and professionals. Waves are generally 3-5 meters high but can reach up to 15 meters.
  1. Plengkung Beach (G-Land), Banyuwangi
Indonesia has a very adorable Plengkung Beach in the eastern part of Java Island. What attracts here the most is its natural beauty along with the long coastline, making it one of the best surfing sites in the world. The surfers love the place because the waves break after 1-2 km, roll from east to west, and can reach up to 4-6 meters high in just 5 minutes. As of now, it is one of the most selected destinations for international surfing championships. Its location and surroundings mesmerize tourists as these keep them at bay with the hustle and bustle of city life. This is a ‘no network’ area and hence, an amazing escape from the hectic life.
  1. Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra
The Mentawai Islands is an archipelago of more than 70 islands spread over 150 km off the western coast of Sumatra. There are three main surfing regions here, namely, Northern Islands, Central Islands, and Southern Islands. The visitors can play with huge waves on all levels on these islands. The islands have something to offer throughout the year. The beginners can surf here during the low swell season (December to March), the experienced ones can come here during peak swell months (May to September), and intermediate ones can enjoy in between these months.
  1. Tanjung Setia Beach, Lampung
Thanks to its location right in the mid of the Indian Ocean, Tanjung Setia Beach offers gigantic waves that make it quite challenging and thrilling for surfers. The waves can gain a height of 200 meters during the peak surfing season. Apart from the huge waves, its beautiful coastline, tall palm trees, and gorgeous sunset views attract tourists.
  1. Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara
The whole country is famous for its stunning waves, and the same goes for Rote Island. If you’re willing to cut off from the world for a while, relax and explore at the same time, and ride the beautiful waves, Rote Island would be your dream location. It attracts all types of tourists all the year round. T-Land is the island’s most renowned wave and surf spot. March to November is the dry season that provides the most favorable surf conditions. It would not fail to provide you with memorable surf experiences.
