Delf: Explore the Student City In Netherlands

When discussing the Netherlands, we usually think about Amsterdam and the canals. That’s why I will introduce you to a hidden gem of Holland, Delft. This small town, hidden between the magnificent Hague and the imposing Rotterdam, is a beautiful miniature of Holland. With almost 100,000 inhabitants, it is located on the small river Schie. Delft is inextricably linked with today’s royal family and its history, and all the tombs of the royal members are located to this day in the area of Delft. Let’s find out what you can see if you visit the place.

Prinsenhof Museum (Prinsenhof)

Delft is one of the most historic cities in the Netherlands. There is the Princenhof museum, which in the Middle Ages was built as a monastery. Later, it was used as the residence of Prince William of Orange, considered Holland’s founder and father. The museum exhibits Prince William’s history and Delft’s rich history, with the creation of the Republic of Holland.

Nieuwe Kerk (new church)

Strolling through the Central Markt square of Delft, you will find the new church with its tall tower standing out. The new church is associated with the royal family as the royal members are buried in a tombstone there. It is a Protestant Church of the Gothic style that was built in 1430, while the completion of its tower dates to 1496.

Walking through the canals and the flea market

I’m sure you’ll first go for a walk when you get to Delft. In each alley, you can enjoy the same lovely landscape. Small, beautiful canals with colorful flowers to decorate them right and left (especially during the year’s warm months), as well as bicycles that adorn every mile of the road. There you will discover the unique shops housed in vintage buildings keeping the area’s naturalness untouched.

For a more intense connection to the city and locals, I would suggest a walk from Delft’s flea market. There, among the almost 120 stalls that exist, you can buy fresh local products, fragrant flowers, and books. If you are a fan of classical antiques, there is also a stand waiting for you. Delft is the birthplace of the famous handmade blue and white ceramics. In the flea market, you can find them at excellent prices. Bargaining is always welcome to achieve a more attractive and fun offer.

About food

The Netherlands is the Queen of potatoes since potatoes are the most famous fast food there. Here is the temple for the “potato lovers.” You can taste them with sauces of your choice and accompany them with a walk in the picturesque alleys. A traditional dish that you have to try is bitterballen. Fried, crispy meatballs, usually served with mustard, are the perfect accompaniment to a cool beer.

If you want to taste something sweet, I recommend stroopwafel. It’s the perfect breakfast with your coffee, milk, or juice. These are pretty sweet, so be careful not to overeat. Finally, we should remember to mention the cheeses! You have to try them on a platter, in toast, food, or sweet, wherever they are.

Nightlife

Of course, the nightlife could not be missing. Delft and the Netherlands, in general, are famous for their pubs. The city center is full of them, making it ideal for various choices, and you are almost sure to find a place to sit. Generally, due to its University (TU Delf, Polytechnic), the area is full of students who frequently hang out with their friends. However, it also has quieter corners for those who want more privacy.

Two suggestions to spend your evening are the beer houses De Ruif and Bierfabriek. Most of De Ruif’s tables are on a floating boat on the canal, making the experience more unique. In Bierfabriek again, the store has its own brewery and manufactures homemade beer.

Biking in Delft

The Netherlands is the country of bicycles. So make sure to rent a bike to go around the streets. You will not get tired since the country is flat and no single mountain exists. After all you have read, I hope I’ve convinced you to visit Delft sometime soon.
